Should You Get An Ionic Auto Air Purifier?

It's a dangerous world out there, partially because most things that can harm your health are too small for you to see.  Wouldn’t it be great if there was a gadget that you could put in your car that takes away everything bad in the air and lets the inside of your car become like breathing in clear mountain air?  Well, keep on dreaming, because no such gadget has been invented yet.  The highly touted ionic auto air purifiers certainly are actually worse than doing nothing.

How does an ionic auto air purifier harm you more than help you?  When it's on, in order to attract molecules to it, it generates an ionic field.  In order to this, it generates a very nasty chemical called ozone.  You've probably heard of ozone in reports about global warming and the holes in the ozone layer.   This ozone put out by ionic auto air purifiers is the same stuff.

And it is not good for you to be sitting in a roomful of ozone.  You might as well take a good whiff of car exhaust.  Okay, it's not that bad, but it's still not good for you.  In 2005, the venerable independent product rating magazine "Consumer Reports" slammed any ionic air purifier as causing

lung damage, but harmful to the environment overall.  The Environmental Protection Association also does not recommend the use of popular ionic air purifiers, such as the Ionic Pro Mini air purifier.

Because of their potentially harmful effects, ionic auto air purifiers are only to be used as little as possible, and only by people who really have a medical need for it.  People with bronchitis or severe pollen allergies can benefit with help from an ionic auto air purifier.  It's harsh medicine, but it's preferred over doing nothing.  Also, an ionic auto air purifier needs to be used in conjunction with (and not in replacement of) proper medical care and medications.

Why Are They Popular?

If you go into many department stores or look online, you can find a ton of places that sell ionic auto air purifiers.  If they are being stocked by so many stores, that means there is a big customer demand for them.  But if they don’t work and in fact are bad for you, then why are they so popular?  Well, smoking is popular, despite the facts known by the smoker.  People have a tendency to ignore what anyone else says and do whatever they want.
